Why did he agree to this? Why did he agree to this?! What did Idia really think would come from this!? He’s been second guessing himself and regretting this the moment they had agreed to this, had tried to get out of it several times when Vil was setting dates and times to meet up, and had taken a lot of prep talk to himself to get him out of his room to leave for this. Idia had at least convinced Vil he would make his own way there. He needs an exit strategy after all, in case things go poorly.
It’s why Idia arrives with a helmet in hand, having borrowed the Ignihyde Magical Wheel for the day. It was so much better than using a broom. Seriously, he wishes he could have his chariot at school… But the drive down to the town helped calm his nerves, being able to relax as he drives and forgetting what he was getting himself into. Only for them to be set back off again upon spotting Vil.
Why is he doing this?! Is it too late to turn back around and leave…?
At least he wasn’t a total mess when he shows up, having thrown on a decent enough outfit, but still trying to cover up the best he can. It had taken a lot of restraint not to throw a face mask on as well, but since they were going to be eating it would just get in the way... though he still shoved one into his pocket, in case his anxiety gets the best of him and Idia needs it later.
Sometimes, Vil wonders why he has to expend so much effort on friendship.
Some people make it look so easy. Kalim, Rook, and Cater are the first to come to mind in that regard, though Kalim can be careless and Rook overwhelming in his weirdness and Cater somehow fake in his presentation. They talk comfortably with everyone and can usher others into doing things with them and there isn't a hint of strain along the way.
Maybe he's just choosing an especially annoying subject to try befriending. Yes, that makes more sense than personally struggling with friendship. He had a good friend in Jack when he was younger, right? He's gotten along with others just fine, even if he doesn't usually seek out their company outside of classes and clubs.
It's just Idia being Idia. Idia, who "loves" ramen without ever trying real ramen. Idia, who has a sweet tooth but has never gone into a candy store. He's doing him a favor by looking up what's available in the town at the bottom of the hill, finding out there is in fact a shop that serves ramen and a confectionery store separate from the bakeries that serve the population.
Yes. He's just dealing with someone exceedingly difficult and not friend-deficient himself.
He arrives in town on a broom and stashes it in a tree that Rook had recommended as a good hiding spot; he'd rather not carry it around while cruising shops if he can help it. He waits for Idia at a bench just off from the town square, sunglasses temporarily slotted on his jacket lapel while he touches up his makeup and ensures his ponytail doesn't look too messy.
Idia isn't arriving quickly enough for his liking, so Vil snaps shut his compact and walks over to meet him. "Did you lock up your magical wheel properly? Some of my potatoes had a run-in with some local hoodlums who tried to take theirs."
Actually, the magical wheel was borrowed from Ignihyde, wasn't it? So Idia possibly knew about the incident.
So Idia possibly knew about the incident? So Idia possibly knew about the incident?! Do you know how much whining he had to put up hearing from those who worked on the project?! About how much sand got into the parts?! Who takes a magical wheel to the beach like that!? Without shielding it so it wouldn't get jammed up with crap getting into the parts or damaging the paint?! It really was their own fault for lending it out before it was going to be presented, and Idia had pointed it out to them, called them all idiots, but he still had to put up with them whining about it!
"Do I look like an empty headed first year?!" Well done Vil, Idia's no longer nervous. Nerves were well gone with that implied accusation. "Don't compare me to them!" Why hadn't you been watching them better?! Keep your potatoes out of his dorm's work! "Do you have any clue how close they were to fucking up my dorm's project?!" Do you even have the first clue how much work it took to make a magical wheel when you didn't have production lines in place?!
Vil's brow rises very slow as Idia goes off on a rant immediately. Well, so much for a pleasant start to the afternoon. With an audible sigh, he plucks his sunglasses from his lapel and slides them on, as if preparing for a hail of spittle. It's not quite that bad, fortunately. "But they didn't, so your complaints should be aimed at the bleeding heart who borrowed it out."
He could snap back at Idia about the entire incident, but he's quick to rationalize that he simply does not care; at that point in time, he had been extremely focused on the VDC, and the efforts of all the other dorms fell beyond his purview and notice. He can't bring himself to reflect upon the cultural fair much at all, given his overblot and performing while injured kept him from venturing outside for the second day of events.
"Are you done? Our reservation is in ten minutes."
The reservation wasn't necessary, given the day-to-day activity in the town's restaurants, but it made it easier to plan the rest of the day.
There's an inhale, maybe a sign he was going to keep going. But instead Idia let it out as a long sigh, shoulders slumping as he deflated, that annoyance leaving him and returning him back to his normal self, his softer tone returning, "Yeah, yeah, I am." It was all such BS, but they had dealt with it. Later he still may prod at the fact Vil should had also stopped it, but for now, whatever.
Really Vil, the fact Idia had more obedience worked into his dorm than you did with your little apple is not a great thing...
"Where we going?" Idia had wanted to check out the full area digitally before showing up, but Ortho had told him to make it a surprise and just enjoy it. It was going to be a fun day out! His big brother should just go and have fun... much to Idia's dislike. So, he may not had fully checked it out... but he did make sure he had a backup set of information on his phone he brought just in case he has to leave and make a run from this all.
All in all, it's a pretty normal day, save for the fact that Idia Shroud has actually come to class instead of a flying tablet. Probably got totally chewed out by Trein, Cater figures. Well, even if he was dragged in, it's always kind of nice to see him--even if they're not going to have a chance to talk until after class and Idia will very definitely try and run off before Cater can try and strike up a conversation. Good for you, he thinks. You're doing it!
Ortho's gotta be proud, too.
The day's test is pretty tough, so he's not able to sneak any glances to social media, which is why when the bell rings and the class is over for the day, he lingers behind, distracted with catching up on his feed. Someone passing by invites him along for something and he waves them off with an apology. Dinner with Heartslabyul, he says, lying easily. Actually, he's got a livestream scheduled for a bit later in the evening, so he wants to make sure he leaves enough time to prepare. It's hard enough keeping his dormmates out of his room when he has a performance.
Cater stretches, thinking about what the plan actually is for the night when a familiar song reaches him. There's a second where he thinks it's in his own head but then he realizes no, it's coming from a row below him and off to the side...sure enough, leaning forward he catches a glimpse of Idia shroud hunched over and fiddling with something, headphones on the desk in front of him.
"Huh--Idia, you're still here?" Cater would've thought he'd be long gone. And more importantly. "What're you listening to?"
He definitely knows that song, but there's no way, right?
Why can't the tests be online? It would be so much easier. There would even be a way to get around the 'make sure they aren't cheating' thing. Well, not Idia if he didn't want to, but he still see no point in cheating, in studies or in games. All it does is hurt yourself. But NNNNnnooooo! He had to be forced into class to take it. UGhhhh. And worse... using a pen. He couldn't even type it. Which... fine, not like he can't use one, even if he would always pick typing over writing outside of quick notes.
Trein won't even let him wear his headphones during it! Even just for the noise cancelling! UGGGHHHH!
But... Idia gets through it, it really wasn't that tough a test. But it doesn't mean he doesn't have to destress from it afterwards, of having to come in to do it in person, of having to sit around others during it. He hates this so much. So while he's normally first out of the room if he can manage it, since it's a test most were rushing out ahead of him, leaving him time to poke away at his computer and sort out some stuff rather than get caught up in the stampede out of the door. You know what would help him unwind? Music.
And there's this great indie music maker he's been obsessed with of late. They were so good to work to! That's just what he needs. Hell, he even has limited edition tracks that only he got! It's so sweet, Idia chuckling to himself as he brought up the song selection, starting it up and going to grab his headphones to put them on and...
Oh... Cater.
SIIIGGGGHHH. Please don't try and drag him along to anything after this, Idia just wants to retreat back to his room. Maybe stop a vending machine. Then room.
Oh, um... how to answer this? "A-a-ah, just, ah, just... some indie musician I found..." Ahhhh, that was the wrong thing to say, wasn't it?! He should had said it was anime music or something! Idia knows Cater is part of the Light Music Club, he doesn't want to hang around answering question about this all with him!
"Yeah? I'm always on the lookout for new artists, do you mind if I listen really quick?" Fortunately, for how brash he can be when it comes to forcing Idia along with him on outings, it's not like he's going to jump over and swipe the headphones off the desk. Anyway, he just wants a closer listen to that voice--it's not like it's for sure the cover artist that came to mind. Sure, it's kind of an obscure song, but...
Gathering up his things, he stands to make his way over to Idia's desk, smiling his usual unaffected smile.
"I-I-I-I!" Please hold while Idia's brain reloads. It's not just a case of someone touching his stuff, it's the fact of what track is playing.
"H-H-Hold on! I gotta change tracks!" He made a promise not to put that out anywhere, so it couldn't be copied or burnt! He's got to respect the artist's choice! "N-Not that song!"
Cater stops mid-step, hesitating. Watching Idia frantically go to change tracks, a weird feeling settles in his stomach. It couldn't be, right? That song, how hurriedly he's trying to hide it...it's just Idia being Idia, it's gotta be. This is a weird coincidence. "Okay, sure! Whatever works," he agrees, tucking his notebook underneath his arm and shifting on his feet.
Cater's free hand messes with his hair. "JSYK, I don't judge anyone for their music prefs. Like, Lils is super into screamo death metal, and sometimes I listen to technopop..."
[One of the new students to NRC this year was a little different to the others, and not just due to his unusual appearance, but by the companion he had brought with him. One of the newest members of Iginhyde arriving at the school with his ‘big brother’, a robot who accompanied Ortho everywhere he went. While Idia followed Ortho around most places, he still encourages his brother to try and do stuff himself, but is not going to push him too far, knowing his brother’s difficulties with… well a lot of things. So he’s happy when Ortho takes an interest in a club and Idia is ‘encouraged’ to leave him there by the club leader, Vil Schoenheit. The first few meetings he will stay outside the door, to reassure Ortho it’s ok. Yet as time goes on and Ortho seems more comfortable at the club… he starts to explore the school.
Including coming across the other clubs, curious enough to glance on in and see what is happening. Such as the Light Music Club.]
[There's been a lot of talk going around about the peculiar first year and his companion. It was absolutely no surprise, of course, when Ortho Shroud was sorted into Ignihyde--one look at the robot he called his brother and it was all but guaranteed where he'd go at orientation. Still, who wouldn't be curious? An AI so clearly sophisticated...
Cater got glimpses of him here and there, but the difference in years and dorms meant there hadn't been much of a chance for him to stop and make conversation. He'd gotten what information he could from searching online--even Ignihyde students made use of social media, after all--but it was nothing compared to what he could learn if he just had a chance to meet either of them.
So, when he and his clubmates were sitting around chatting and snacking and that distinctively-designed robot appears in the doorway, Cater's more than happy to jump at the chance. Fortunately, Kalim and Lilia were always the sort to agree that more is merrier.]
Hey! You're Idia Shroud, right? What brings you to our humble club?
Edited (I forgot what format we're using LOL) 2023-02-08 19:23 (UTC)
[Ah, yes.] Cater Diamond, Kalim Al-Asim, Lilia Vanrouge. Hello. [Barely a moment needed to bring up all information he had on them, and adding in more as he makes note of how they moved and spoke upon greeting him.
Before answering the question directed at him.] Ortho is in his club meeting, I am wanting to investigate the school more. This is the Light Music Club. [Not meant as a question, but a statement, he moving his arms behind his back to hold the wrist of one arm in his other hand, his six foot height seeming even taller since Idia tends to float an extra half foot off the ground at all times.]
[Cater's pretty sure that he overheard Vil say something about a "promising new spudling" that had joined the film club...maybe that's Ortho. He'll have to ask about it when he sees Vil in their shared potions elective.]
Wanna hang with us, see how you like it?
[Kalim is more than eager to chime in about all the snacks they have, which makes Lilia laugh considering...well, their guest won't be able to partake. Still, the Diasomnia vice housewarden is just as encouraging as the other two in his soft spoken way.]
If you're interested in music, we can play you something. We do more chatting than practicing most meetings.
[Hmmm,] I would be curious to see what the other clubs are like. I had been planning to look at the Board Game Club too. [He likes games, but can't play them against most people, he wins too easily. Unless they are luck based. Still,] Thank you for the invite. [Floating his way further into the room and looking around to it all.
Noting that it looks like they were on break. And with the offer of that food, a pause, before his eyes squint a little, showing he was meaning it as a smile... despite that constant 'grin' he had on his mask.] I do not have a means to eat in this body. [Then curious,] Is this club not a means to practice and improve your skills then?
Even with the events of their own world, this is all very strange and usual. An entirely new world, full of a range of magic unlike Twisted Wonderland, in a setting that feels right out of a fantasy game. It's both overwhelming. And exciting. It feels like an adventure. One Ortho feels a little less prepared for with his sudden change in physical form, having awoken in a human body rather than his robotic one, but he's excited. Nervous, but excited. Is this how nii-san felt? Those nerves? A slight panic of the unknown. Ortho feels so unprepared without his normal metal form.
But he doesn't want to miss out on new chances because of that. He wants to learn about this place. Have fun with it. Make memories.
And one of this first memories is something he's always wanted to do with his brother; go to an arcade. He knows nii-san would like one if he gave it a chance, so maybe Ortho can learn about this one and take Idia to it later! Yet heading inside he spies someone he does know, not his brother, but his classmate. "Cater Diamond-san!"
Cater's examining one of the dance games in the arcade when he hears a familiar voice. "Hey, Ortho!" He greets before he's even fully turned around, smile on his face, only to blink in surprise when he actually sees the kid in question. "Whoa, get a load of you!"
It must have been the magic of this place--but that was wild. It took everyone's powers away but completely transformed his underclassman?
It is certainly a major transformation. Even bigger than his time merged as a Phantom. And just as alien to him. "I am still adapting to the changes and getting accustom to this body. It is both interesting and overwhelming." Ortho knew how biological bodies worked, knew of the mechanics behind them and how to keep them functioning correctly... mostly to keep his brother alive.
But living in one is completely different. "I am trying my best." And that optimism that is part of Ortho is still there. Even now.
"Did you come to play games as well? I wanted to investigate to find games nii-san would like to play." If Ortho knew there was certain games Idia liked here then it would be a better bait advantage to trying to get him to come to the arcade.
Cater grins. He can only imagine how disorienting it must be for Ortho--he's never been anything other than human, after all. What would it be like to suddenly find yourself in a completely foreign body?
"I'm sure you'll get the hang of it in no time."
He was, after all, a Shroud. He was sure to channel that brilliance into this new experience. Cater made a mental note to spoil him with all manner of junk foods when he had the chance...but for now, how about focusing on what was in front of them?
"Yeah! I thought it would be a nice break from gaining my bearings in fantasy land." And the stress of having no magic, among other things. "Not sure what I want to play, though. Anything catching your eye? We could co-op, if you want."
"Really?" You'll play games with him, Cater?! Ortho's face lighting up at the offer. Cater has always been good to him at NRC, but the chance to play games with others is so important to Ortho. Gaming in all its forms were important to the Shroud brothers.
"I want a game my brother would like. I want to bring him here, but... you know what he's like." Although Cater was good at times of literally dragging Idia out of his room. Normally with much complaint. Hmm what kind of game would his brother like? "Nothing too athletic. Not to start with. It should be something he finds most similar to what he likes, to encourage him to try it out." Ortho talking like his brother is just another test subject...
"I wonder if there is something similar to Star Rogue here. Oh! Or a VR game. If he uses VR maybe he will forget there is others around and become more immersed in it." Aka, trying to trick Idia.
Because of her unique circumstances, Agnes had always had a bit of a complicated grasp on time. She wasn't immortal, not necessarily, but life as an avatar was rarely ever straightforward. So, disappearing from Duplicity for multiple years didn't necessarily resonate with her the way that it should've when she found herself being reprocessed into the program.
A submissive returned without contract, without belongings, and worst of all...without friends.
"Normal life" was still something that she had been trying to grasp for herself within the confines of what Duplicity allowed before her vanishing, so she still found herself now somewhat at a loss of what to do with herself. How was one meant to properly process these circumstances? Were there expected behaviors? There was little that really stood out to her as what might be the right first move...and so she did what she always did, to think.
Sort of.
Her scenery of choice, this time, is a bit different. Well, shockingly different, when one considered that not only had Catsanova ever been her cafe of choice, but it had also been thoroughly remodeled since the last time she'd seen it. Still, Agnes shows no particular amount of surprise on her face as she enters. She shows no particular interest in anything at all, really. Just orders a plain black coffee, takes a seat, and watches the people come and go.
And there she sits, and stares, and sits, and stares, her coffee steaming endlessly between her hands as she makes no attempt to drink it.
Hm. Well. She wouldn't be the first customer to just... sit and stare, but Idia's more used to that being Aqua when he's keeping an eye on Ruby. And taking up a seat. Sometimes Azul. But he was good and played the part of a customer at the same time. This person however... was taking up a seat with her staring. And her coffee. Which... shouldn't it be cold by now?
Time to play good customer service and check on her. Idia heading over to check on her, "Would you like anything else? Need your coffee refreshed?"
Even when it becomes clear that she's being actively approached, Agnes doesn't immediately turn her gaze up toward Idia--as if she doesn't truly notice him until he speaks. Her expression doesn't change altogether that much as she looks up at him, though there's perhaps a subtle hint of confusion at the question.
"I'm fine with what I have," she says slowly, fingers coiling almost protectively around her cup--as if it might very well be taken away from her. Then, that micro-expression changes to something more...uncertain? Or, perhaps, even a touch self-conscious?
"Would it be appropriate for me to order something else? My friend came here often, but I never asked him about the etiquette."
The clubs here that came with host services were ones she'd never taken the time to explore.
THAT'S NOT WHAT HE'S IMPLYING! Ugh, whatever. At least she's here at a quieter time, not the full flow of the evening traffic yet. And while he has gotten better, Idia still feels weird trying to push buying more on customers. Leave that to his Staff and Cats, they were good at it.
Instead, "No, not if you don't want to." Hm. "Ah, friend?" A regular maybe?
Sorry, Idia, she's just not savvy about certain things! Social cues are not her strong point! Certain things just need to be stated to her as straightforward as possible for her to understand what the expectation is.
"Yes...I believe he even worked here, at one point. Do you know him? Jonathan Sims, The Archivist."
She doesn't realize that he hasn't really been a cafe regular since...well, multiple owners ago. Things change when you're gone from the city for years.

Beep Boop AU
Including coming across the other clubs, curious enough to glance on in and see what is happening. Such as the Light Music Club.]
no subject
What brings you to our humble club?
no subject
Before answering the question directed at him.] Ortho is in his club meeting, I am wanting to investigate the school more. This is the Light Music Club. [Not meant as a question, but a statement, he moving his arms behind his back to hold the wrist of one arm in his other hand, his six foot height seeming even taller since Idia tends to float an extra half foot off the ground at all times.]
no subject

Labyrinthum App proof - Closed to Cater
"Cater Diamond-san!"
no subject
It must have been the magic of this place--but that was wild. It took everyone's powers away but completely transformed his underclassman?
"Do you feel as good as you look?"
no subject
But living in one is completely different. "I am trying my best." And that optimism that is part of Ortho is still there. Even now.
"Did you come to play games as well? I wanted to investigate to find games nii-san would like to play." If Ortho knew there was certain games Idia liked here then it would be a better
baitadvantage to trying to get him to come to the arcade.no subject
"I'm sure you'll get the hang of it in no time."
He was, after all, a Shroud. He was sure to channel that brilliance into this new experience. Cater made a mental note to spoil him with all manner of junk foods when he had the chance...but for now, how about focusing on what was in front of them?
"Yeah! I thought it would be a nice break from gaining my bearings in fantasy land." And the stress of having no magic, among other things. "Not sure what I want to play, though. Anything catching your eye? We could co-op, if you want."
no subject

Duplicity AU in which I force Idia to have a thing for redheads
And there she sits, and stares, and sits, and stares, her coffee steaming endlessly between her hands as she makes no attempt to drink it.
oh my
Time to play good customer service and check on her. Idia heading over to check on her, "Would you like anything else? Need your coffee refreshed?"
no subject
"I'm fine with what I have," she says slowly, fingers coiling almost protectively around her cup--as if it might very well be taken away from her. Then, that micro-expression changes to something more...uncertain? Or, perhaps, even a touch self-conscious?
"Would it be appropriate for me to order something else? My friend came here often, but I never asked him about the etiquette."
The clubs here that came with host services were ones she'd never taken the time to explore.
no subject
Instead, "No, not if you don't want to." Hm. "Ah, friend?" A regular maybe?
no subject
"Yes...I believe he even worked here, at one point. Do you know him? Jonathan Sims, The Archivist."
She doesn't realize that he hasn't really been a cafe regular since...well, multiple owners ago. Things change when you're gone from the city for years.
